Volunteer programs

Woman and dogBereavement programs
Under the general direction of the spiritual care and bereavement programs staff, the volunteer is responsible for placing phone calls to bereaved families to identify needs to appropriate community and hospital resources. Demonstrate a warm, pleasant personality and possess excellent communication skills.
Minimum age: Adult

Breast Health Center
Friday's only, Breast Clinic, to assist staff as needed and by referral only.
Minimum age: Adult, WOMEN ONLY
Hours: 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Friday

Cancer Institute

Welcome and provide services, information and support to cancer patients, families, and other interested people. Collaborate with the Loma Linda University Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society and its patient service programs. Some clerical, filing, copying, preparing mailings, phone coverage, and computer work is available.
Minimum age: 16 years
Hours: 8:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday

Emergency Dept.Cancer visitation program
Provide visitation and resources to all inpatients in the oncology units.
Minimum age: Adult
Hours: Varies, 2 hours per visitation

Care connection van
Be the special liaison person and drive the transportation van taking patients and families from Sun City area to Loma Linda area for various medical/dental appointments or visits.
Minimum age: Adult, living in or near Sun City.
Hours: 9:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m., Monday-Friday

Central service
Assist with packaging supplies for patient care.
Minimum age: 14 years
Hours: Variable, Monday-Friday

The "Cheerful Encounter" project
Your activity choices can include fund raising, making handmade items, maintaining supplies and compiling data regarding inventory and usage. This fund helps provide activities, toys, games and crafts for inpatients and outpatients. Can be "at home" project.
Minimum age: 14 years

Cards of Care
Create and assemble cheerful greeting cards to be distributed to our patients by volunteers. You can personally design and decorate the outside by drawing, coloring, or painting. Using sparkles, glued items, and puffy paints are acceptable. Please feel free to contact our office for a number of special needs and more information.

Concierge service
Provides assistance to patients and guests in locating areas throughout the facility. Assist wheelchair patients to their appointment, deliver items as needed.

Diabetes treatment center

Works independently and cooperatively on special projects for diabetes education. Qualifications needed are technical and theoretical expertise in related field, confidentiality, courtesy in relating to others.
Minimum age: Adult

Dispatch
Demonstrate a warm, pleasant personality. No physical/medical disabilities which might limit ability to walk--must be able to walk 4-5 miles per day. Responsibilities include locating wheelchairs and gurneys that are not being used and return them to storage areas; assisting in delivering medical supplies and equipment to the patient units; assisting with discharge of patients from hospital, and transporting patients from units to hospital departments.
Minimum age: Adult
Hours: 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., 7 days a week

Drayson Center
Assist staff with sports activities and physical fitness program. Wellness Center and special events volunteer support.
Minimum age: 14 years
Hours: 5:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., 6 days a week

Emergency department
Greet and interact with patients and visitors. Assist emergency department staff, stock shelves, and transport patients. Escort patients and families to other areas, run errands to other departments in hospital, pick up supplies from central service, stock supplies, and make up beds. Be effective advocate for families and support to staff.

Hours: 24/7, Sunday-Saturday

Gift shop
Become an active member of our volunteer team assisting in the gift shop. Interact with patients, visitors, and staff while helping to raise funds to support hospital programs. Assist in this exciting environment with sales, merchandising, stocking, and gift wrapping. Good customer service is important. See gift shop web page.

Information/reception center
Welcome and provide informational assistance to patients and visitors in the main lobby information/reception center. Assist staff with phones and computer. Help answer questions regarding Medical Center and community activities. Bilingual is helpful but not required. Good customer service is very important.
Minimum age: 14 years, prerequisite for volunteers under 18 years: Concierge
Hours: 8:00 a.m.- 8:00 p.m., Sunday - Saturday

International Heart Institute
Support the staff in overall office duties, special projects such as answer telephones, deliveries/errands, filing, copying, stuffing envelopes, labeling.
Minimum age: 14 years
Hours: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday-Thursday

Marketing, Loma Linda University Medical Center
Assist in supporting marketing efforts of medical center and help with data entry. Good customer service is required. Related education required.
Minimum age: Adult, with marketing supervisor approval
Hours: Variable, Monday-Friday

Medical library
Assist in shelving journals, filing circulation cards, delivery of Medline/Dialog searches, stamp books, copy materials, check overdue books, and answer phone.
Minimum age: 14 years
Hours: 8:00 a.m.- 6:00 p.m., Monday-Thursday
8:00 a.m.- 3:30 p.m., Friday

Mended Hearts support program
Help communicate with and support heart disease patients and their families both before and after surgery. Assist at the Mended Hearts desk in the International Heart Institute. Qualifications include being a previous heart patient and becoming a member of Mended Hearts, Inc.
Minimum age: Adult
Hours: Variable, Sunday-Saturday

Music connection
Music connection fosters a positive, soothing atmosphere as volunteers provide music visitations to patients at bedside. If you are musically inclined and enjoy offering your talents to others, consider participating in this uplifting program. We ask that teens and college students be enrolled in a music program either through their school or other agency.
Minimum age: 14 years
Hours: Variable, Monday-Sunday

Observation unit
Escort patients to the main lobby upon discharge. Run errands for the department as the need arises. Perform other tasks such as stocking, obtain food trays and assisting with unit cleanup. Some light clerical work.

Operation care package
Let patients know we care about them by delivering a gift to them post-surgery. Program includes preparing and delivering gifts.

Magazine distribution
Make a cheerful bedside contact with patients to allow opportunity to choose magazines or a book. Socialize and sometimes read to patients.

Diversional therapy
Visit with patients and help to discern their needs for diversional activities such as crafts, needlework, reading, games, and letter writing. Our patients look forward to volunteer visits as they may not have families or visitors. Essential to the patient's recovery and well-being.

Hours: 8:00 a.m.- 6:00 p.m., Monday-Friday

Mail delivery
Help deliver patient mail to the units and distribute ?Cards of Care?. Our patients look forward to receiving mail, it shows that someone cares about them.

Pet enrichment therapy (P.E.T.)
Teams of specially trained volunteers and their dogs are available for visitations to patients in rehabilitation units. With physician's approval, patients can request a P.E.T. visit and delight in the dogs that have been veterinarian screened and trained to work with patients. Your pet will need dog obedience certification.

Pharmacy
Deliveries/errands from the various areas of the pharmacy to the nursing units.
Minimum age: Adult
Hours: 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., Monday-Friday

Pre-admission testing service (PATS)
Escort patients to and from other testing areas. Run frequent errands for the department. Assist with some light clerical work as the need arises. Maintain the patient waiting area.
Minimum age: 14 years
Hours: 7:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m., Monday-Thursday
7:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m., Friday

Radiation medicine
Demonstrate a warm and pleasant personality which lends itself to effective relationships with people. Excellent communication skills with staff and patients. Assemble new patient chart packs, deliver and pickup items throughout the Medical Center, assist in copying charts and films.

Hours: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday

Rehabilitation inpatient services
Interact with patients. Assist therapists in patient care and observe physical therapy treatments.
Minimum age: 14 years with approval of Volunteer Services staff
Hours: 8:00 a.m.- 6:00 p.m., Monday-Friday

Rehabilitation outpatient services
Welcome patients and assist with transfer of patients to therapy. Observe and assist in therapy programs which include: hand rehabilitation, neurophysical adult programs, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech and language pathology, and WERC. Also plan to assist in case management activities and clerical support.
Minimum age: 16 years

Research

Cardiomyopathy service
Volunteer research assistant

Order and obtain charts from medical records department; extract data from chart and enter onto form; maintain list of completed files (update every 6 months); interface with data entry personnel; perform related literature searches; pull and copy articles as needed; follow-up phone calls as needed. MDs preferred and related education.
Minimum age: 18 years
Hours: 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., Monday - Friday

Perinatal biology

Volunteer research assistant
Search and copy research articles in medical library. Perform on-line computer based searches of medical literature databases. Organize medical literature reprints. Related education required.
Minimum age: Adult
Hours: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday

Cytology

Pick up specimens, file slides, light clerical, copy teaching materials. Minimum age: 18 years Hours: varies

SACH Norton medical clinic and dental clinic

Provide assistance with greeting patients, interacting with the children during clinic, assist staff with clerical duties.

Special events
Special events occur periodically throughout the year. Your valuable time and skills can be utilized for registration and sign-in, supervision, entertainment and education, setup, and many other components. Check with us on dates for these special events:

Special projects
Enjoy singing? Come join us in Christmas caroling to patients at Christmas time. Take delight in making people laugh? Become a clown visitor and take balloons around to the patients to help cheer them. Take pleasure from making crafts? Create handmade gifts and toys to be donated and distributed to the patients. We need innovative volunteers to assist with patient entertainment (parties, music, puppet shows, nature stories etc.) If staying out of the limelight is your cup of tea we also have occasional large mailings available throughout the year. Come show us your special talents!

Surgery waiting area
Provide liaison, communication, and support to families and friends of patients undergoing inpatient or outpatient surgery. Surgery waiting area is located in the main lobby of the Medical Center. Good customer service is needed.

Volunteer services

Volunteer receptionist

Help us sign up new volunteers. Learn the operation of the busy volunteer services offices. Assist with phones, computer work, errands, Copying, faxing, filing, and receptionist duties. Also you can develop expertise as a tour guide in hospital areas. Assist with volunteer orientations.

Volunteer record management
Collect and enter volunteer daily work data and new volunteer applications on computer; generate welcome letters and address labels.
